US Open 2025: All the Argentine tennis stars to watch at this year’s tournament

Francisco Cerúndolo and Solana Sierra are among the top contenders representing the Albiceste in the final major of the season

The US Open, the fourth tennis major of the season, is set to start on Sunday, and several Argentine players will compete in both the men’s and women’s singles draws. With twelve players confirmed to participate in the tournament and several more that could sneak in via qualifiers, the Albiceleste will be well represented.

Francisco Cerúndolo headlines the men’s draw

At least six Argentine players will vie for the men’s championship  — a dip from the eight that qualified for last year’s tournament.

Leading the pack will be Francisco Cerúndolo, who is currently 19 in the world according to the Associated Tennis Professionals (ATP) rankings posted Monday. Despite dropping out of the Toronto Masters 1000 due to injury and missing the Cincinnati Masters 1000, the Buenos Aires native was able to climb four spots this week thanks to points losses from France’s Arthur Fils and Bulgaria’s Grigor Dimitrov, among others.

With a style of play perhaps best suited for hard-court tennis among this year’s Argentine class, Cerúndolo will be looking to improve on his last two U.S. Open performances in 2023 and 2024, when he reached just the second round.

The other Argentine players who have already clinched a spot in the tournament include Sebastián Báez (ranked 40 in the ATP), Camilo Ugo Carabelli (43), Francisco Comesaña (54), Tomás Etcheverry (58) and Mariano Navone (74).

Facundo Bagnis, Alex Barrena, Juan Pablo Ficovich and Santiago Rodríguez Taverna have already been bounced from qualifiers, while Federico Gómez, Marcos Trungelliti, Juan Manuel Cerúndolo, Thiago Tirante, Román Burruchaga, and Andrea Collarini remain in the running for the main draw.

More magic for Solana Sierra?

On the women’s side of the bracket, Solana Sierra (75) will be the lone Argentine to play in the main draw.

The 21-year-old from Mar del Plata city is fresh off the performance of her life at Wimbledon, where she became the first-ever Lucky Loser, woman or man, to reach the fourth round of the tournament. (The racket and clothing she used during her run have even been placed on display at the Wimbledon Museum.)

Sierra’s performance has also proved a major boon to her career; by reaching the fourth round of the tournament, she climbed from 101 to 66 in the WTA singles’ rankings — a 35-spot jump that secured her a spot in the US Open’s main draw.

Sierra’s countrywomen haven’t been as lucky. Paula Ormaechea, Lourdes Carlé and Julia Riera each needed to prove themselves in qualifiers, and each has already been eliminated.

The Mar del Platense won’t be entirely by herself, however, as both Sol Sol Larraya Guidi and Luna Cinalli will each participate in the Open’s Juniors tournament.

Elsewhere in the US Open

The doubles draw will see four Argentines take the court, as former world number one Horacio Zeballos will play alongside Spaniard Marcel Granollers. The duo, recently crowned champions at Roland Garros, will look to best their 2019 finals appearance and claim their second major title of the year.

Guido Andreozzi is likewise set to play alongside Dutchman Sander Arends, while Máximo González and Andrés Molteni will be the only all-Argentine pairing in the tournament.

In the adaptive tennis draw for players with disabilities, former world number one Gustavo Fernández aims to raise his first Grand Slam trophy. He will be joined by 20-year-old Gustavo Lazarte, a native of Tucuman who won this year’s Swiss Open.
