Argentine football superstar Lionel Messi didn’t get to pick up another trophy for his cabinet on Sunday. Inter Miami fell 3-0 to Seattle Sounders in the Leagues Cup final, in a game that ended in a spat.
It wasn’t a good game for Messi. After returning from injury, he played a key role in helping the Herons to the final. Yet, the Seattle Sounders had no problem fending off the Argentine star. They took the lead just 25 minutes in, as defender Alex Roldán put a cross for American-born Guyana international striker Osaze de Rosario to score with a header.
Messi had a chance to tie the game at the start of the second half, after he combined with Uruguayan striker and long-time friend Luis Suárez to get a clean shot inside the box, but he sent the ball flying over the crossbar.
In the 83rd minute, Roldán left his mark once again, scoring from a penalty to make it 2-0. Just five minutes later, the Inter Miami defense misread a poor pass by him, which found striker Paul Rothrock who scored the 3-0.
After the final whistle, several Inter Miami players barged onto the pitch, coming at a couple of Seattle Sounders players who had committed harsh fouls against Inter Miami players, especially Messi.
Argentine Herons defender Tomás Avilés, formerly of Racing Club, was seen throwing a punch at Sounders counterpart Jackson Ragen, after which more players became involved in the brawl, while others attempted to split them up. Suárez had a heated argument with a Seattle staff member and spat at him.
Messi stood at the edge of the incidents and remained on pitch for Seattle Sounders’ celebrations.
Inter Miami head coach and former Argentina national team captain Javier Mascherano said he felt the result was “exaggerated” and that his team “took risks” to try and overturn it.
“Games like this are defined by details. The first couple of minutes cost us the game,” he said. He refused to comment on the post-match fray, saying he was “far from where it happened,” but insisted: “nobody likes it when stuff like that happens.”
