The fifty six Chilean football fans arrested for brawls and damages following the Boca-Colo Colo Copa Libertadores match last Tuesday were fined AR$ 1 million by a Buenos Aires prosecution office, and banned for a year from entering stadiums in Argentina where mass events or football games are being held.

In exchange for the fine, the fans were set free, and the money will be sent to the Buenos Aires city General Attorney’s office, which is acting as an affected party of the incidents. The decision was made by prosecutor Celia Ramírez, of the Buenos Aires City’s Special Prosecutors Office in charge of Mass Events.

Brawls involving fist fights, bottles and rock-throwing broke out in the streets, as well as bars and gas stations, in the surroundings of the Bombonera after the game Boca won 1-0. In front of a McDonald’s by the Obelisk, a traditional spot known for football gatherings and celebrations, police officers had to intervene to break up several fights.

In addition to 56 people arrested for the incidents, six fans and at least three police officers were taken to the Hospital Argerich to be treated for various injuries. Five fans have already been discharged.

The tension had already begun on Monday. In the vicinity of the Obelisk, Colo Colo fans gathered to cheer for their team, which led to some bickering with locals passing through, as well as police arresting some Chileans for pickpocketing. A couple of hours before the game, some 200 Colo Colo supporters tried to enter the Bombonera with tickets that turned out to be counterfeit, which led to some skirmishes with the gate staff.
