Following the Supreme Court’s ruling yesterday barring current San Juan Governor Sergio Uñac from running for a third term in office, the province’s Electoral Tribune announced today that the elections will finally be held on July 2.
They had initially been suspended on May 9 after the opposition presented a legal challenge to the Supreme Court arguing that Uñac’s candidacy was unconstitutional.
The Frente de Todos (FdT) coalition now has until next Tuesday to decide who will run as its candidate for governor in Uñac’s place. One possible alternative is Rubén Uñac, the current governor ‘s brother, who in 2023 will finish his term as senator for San Juan.
He has also been a member of the Lower House for two terms, as well as vice governor of San Juan during José Luis Gioja’s second term, between 2007 and 2011.
The July 2 elections will be for governor and vice governor only, since San Juan went ahead with its legislative elections for local authorities as planned on May 14, in which Peronism won comfortably. In yesterday’s ruling, the Court clarified that San Juan’s constitution would allow Uñac to run for office again in 2027.
