Argentine President Javier Milei traveled to the United States on Thursday to attend a conference organized by investor firm Allen & Company, an annual gathering that brings together CEOs and business leaders from technology and entertainment. He is expected to speak to a group of businesspeople and is scheduled to be back in Argentina on Sunday
This will be Milei’s fifth trip to the U.S. since becoming president, the country he has most visited by far. According to fact-checking site Chequeado, by mid-June, the president had racked up over 167,000 kilometres in travels to Switzerland, Spain, Italy, Vatican City, Israel, the United States, and El Salvador. Since then, he has also visited Brazil, Germany, and the Czech Republic, as well as a second visit to Spain.
The 2024 conference at the Sun Valley Lodge in rural Idaho kicked off on July 9 and among those present are tech leaders Tim Cook and Sam Altman, the CEOs of Apple and OpenAI, respectively. Other CEOs in attendance are Bob Iger (Disney) and Mary Barra (General Motors), as well as New England Patriots owner Bob Kraft.
The conference, which Business Insider media outlet has dubbed the “summercamp for billionaires,” has been taking place since 1980 and, in addition to hosting talks and conferences on geopolitics and future business trends, is considered a spot where deals take place. Among others, it was the place where Jeff Bezos famously agreed to buy The Washington Post in 2013.
Milei’s trips abroad
President Milei has made 11 trips abroad since taking office last December. The U.S. has been his top destination so far, with trips to Washington DC, Austin, Miami, Los Angeles, San Francisco, and now Idaho.
Milei first visited the United States in February 2024 when he was invited to speak at the Conservative Political Action Conference (CPAC) in the nation’s capital, a trip that was highlighted by his brief encounter with with former U.S. President Donald Trump. He returned to the country again in April and May when he visited Austin — where he met with Elon Musk — and Los Angeles.
His fourth trip came in late May to San Francisco and included meetings with Silicon Valley business leaders like Cook and Altman, as well as Google CEO Sundar Pichai and Meta head Mark Zuckerberg. Milei also met with former U.S. Secretary of State Condoleeza Rice and gave a talk at Stanford University.
