Milei details meeting with tech giant Mark Zuckerberg

The president reportedly expressed his desire to turn Argentina into the world’s next major tech hub

President Javier Milei met with Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg in San Francisco on Thursday night, the administration announced Friday. According to a government press release, the pair discussed the ways that artificial intelligence could expedite Argentina’s technological development.

The president was accompanied by his sister, Karina Milei, who serves as presidency secretary; Economic Minister Luis Caputo; Argentine Embassador to the United States Gerardo Werthein; as well as several Meta executives. Also in attendance was the American businessman Marc Andreessen, a former software engineer who co-founded the Silicon Valley venture capital firm Andreessen Horowitz and serves as an advisor to the tech goliath.

During the gathering, Milei reportedly stressed the importance of deregulation in creating the conditions for innovation and economic growth. He also expressed his desire to turn Argentina into a global technological hub, which he claimed would create new employment opportunities.

“We’re communicating to the world who we are now and where we’re going,” said Presidential Spokesman Manuel Adorni during a press briefing. “Can you imagine, or at some point have you imagined, a meeting between a past president of Argentina with Elon Musk or [Mark] Zuckerberg or another mogul of their size? It’s hard to picture the photo.”

In fact, then-President Cristina Fernández de Kirchner met with Zuckerberg in 2015 during the seventh annual Summit of the Americas. There, the two discussed the politics of innovation, science, and technology in the Bilateral Room of the Atlapa Convention Center in Panama City.

On Friday, Milei took to the social media platform to share his Meta avatar with the public. The post featured his signature signoff, “VIVA LA LIBERTAD CARAJO” (“long live freedom, dammit!”)

The president is currently on a diplomatic trip to San Francisco to meet with tech giants including Zuckerberg and Musk, among others. Tomorrow, he will attend the inauguration of Salvadoran President Nayib Bukele in San Salvador.
