Government announces political desk, will call governors to dialogue

Following Sunday’s defeat in the Buenos Aires Province elections, the president has set up an internal discussion forum that includes his sister Karina, Martín Menem, and Santiago Caputo

President Javier Milei has established a political desk to serve as a national politics forum within the Executive Branch. The roundtable will include his sister and Secretary of the Presidency, Karina Milei; Lower House Speaker Martín Menem; and top presidential advisor Santiago Caputo.

The decision was announced this afternoon by presidential spokesperson Manuel Adorni, following cabinet meetings held earlier on Monday at the Casa Rosada. The move comes in response to the setback suffered by La Libertad Avanza after losing to Peronism by a 13-point margin in the Buenos Aires Province elections.

“The President of the Nation has decided to form a national political roundtable. It will be chaired by him and will include: Karina Milei, Guillermo Francos, Patricia Bullrich, Santiago Caputo, Martín Menem, and myself,” Adorni stated on his X account.

Adorni also announced that Milei “instructed the Chief of Staff to convene a federal dialogue roundtable with the governors,” although he declined to specify when the governors would be called or whether any specific projects would be discussed.

According to the presidential spokesperson, the political roundtable for Buenos Aires Province “will be expanded based on the representativeness of those who make up the provincial space.”

The move marks the government’s first political response to Sunday’s defeat, which prompted internal criticism of the strategy led by LLA national leader Karina Milei and LLA provincial head Sebastián Pareja. Although Pareja remains a candidate on LLA’s ballot for the October national legislative elections, he will not be part of the new desk.

Both Karina Milei and Martín Menem have recently been in the spotlight due to a corruption scandal and Congress’s rejection of President Milei’s veto on funding for the disability sector.

Caputo, who had reportedly been sidelined from the campaign’s strategy, now appears to be returning to a key decision-making role, as well as Security Minister Patricia Bullrich.

On Monday, President Milei held cabinet meetings at 9:30 a.m. and 4:30 p.m. In both meetings, the president emphasized the need to review the campaign strategy ahead of the October 26 national legislative elections.

On Sunday night, the president acknowledged the electoral defeat and stated he would take responsibility for the administration’s mistakes.

“We are going to correct everything we’ve done wrong,” he said, while reaffirming that the government’s economic and political direction would remain unchanged.
