Argentine film ‘When Evil Lurks’ lands on Netflix

The award-winning horror film by Damian Rugna made it to the global top 10 of most-watched international films on the platform

One of the most successful Argentine genre films in recent years, Damian Rugna’s horror flick When Evil Lurks (Cuando la maldad acecha) is now available for streaming on Netflix.

The story of two brothers who discover a man infected by evil forces and on the verge of giving birth to a demon also became the most popular horror film in Argentina, where it was released last year. It became the most-watched film on Netflix in Argentina the day after going live and made it to the global top 10 of most-watched international films on the platform.

A folk horror tale with supernatural elements set in a remote village in the Argentine countryside, the film topped the renowned genre-focused Sitges Film Festival in 2023. It was later released in over 600 theaters in the US where it was welcomed with positive reviews.

Director Damian Rugna recently shared an Instagram post recommending some of his favorite recent horror films available on the platform:

Barbarian
Director: Zach Cregger. United States, 2023
Barbarian tells the story of a young woman who arrives at the house she rented in Detroit and discovers that it is already occupied by an intruder — and something much worse is hidden underground. “It’s constantly surprising you,” Rugna said. “When you’re thinking the film is going to head in one direction, it actually goes a different way.”
