Argentina’s women’s national football team aims to secure a place in the 2025 Copa América Femenina on Monday, as it’s set to face off against Peru in its third match of the group stage.
The Albiceleste have hit the ground running in the competition so far. The team came out on top in a tough debut against Uruguay on July 15, winning thanks to a goal from Florencia Bonsegundo late in the second half.
Three days later, they showed resilience after being down by one goal early in the first half against Chile. A score by Daiana Falfán in the 75th tied the affair, with captain Aldana Cometti sealing the win in the 90th minute.
Head coach Germán Portanova’s team is now leading Group A with six points. The Argentine team is two points clear of hosts Ecuador who tied 2-2 with Uruguay at the tournament opener, and then beat Peru 3-1. The Charrúas sit third, also at four points but with an extra game played, while Peru is bottom of the lot and already eliminated after losing all three matches.
A win against Peru will see Argentina through to the semifinals, regardless of the other results. If Ecuador and Chile tie in the other group matchup, it will secure Albiceleste the top spot in Group A. However a win by either side means the final standings won’t be settled until the last round of games. Securing the top spot could prove key for Argentina, as it would mean avoiding nine-time champions Brazil until the final.
Tournament favorites Brazil lead Group B with six points after beating Bolivia and Venezuela. The Vino Tinto are second with four points, tied with Colombia who played one game less. Paraguay is fourth with three, while Bolivia is last and out, having lost all their games so far.
The Copa América Femenina is the biggest of South America’s international women’s football competitions. While this is the first time the tournament winners will not be granted World Cup spots, the top two teams will get into the 2028 Summer Olympics, while the top five could earn their place at the Lima 2027 PanAmerican Games.
“Obviously, the goal is to get as far as possible,” said team captain Aldana Cometti ahead of the tournament. “The chances of making it to the Olympics is something that’s on our minds and it’d be a dream come true,” she added.
Argentina will face Peru on Monday at 6 p.m, before wrapping up its group stage games against Ecuador on July 24 at 9 p.m. The matches will be broadcast in Argentina by TV provider DSports. All schedules are Argentina time.
