Buenos Aires British Cemetery commemorates the 80th Anniversary of the end of World War II in Europe

The event was to remember those who sacrificed their lives and those who returned from battle

As in many cities across Europe, Buenos Aires paid tribute to the 80th anniversary of the end of World War II. A solemn ceremony was held to honour the thousands of Argentine volunteers who fought against totalitarian regimes in defence of freedom.

The event served as a heartfelt remembrance of those who sacrificed their lives and those who returned from battle. Their courageous efforts contributed to the noble cause of securing peace and liberty.

The commemoration was attended by Halvor Sætre, Ambassador of Norway; Lawrence Ward, Deputy Defense Attaché of the British Embassy; Adam Ryszka of the Polish Embassy; Guillermo Alexander Botovchenco Rivera of the Brazilian Embassy; Brian Williams, Anglican Bishop in Argentina; Eliahu Hamra, Rabbi of AMIA; and Mario Oscar Caraballo, representing the French Mutual Aid Association in Buenos Aires. Numerous other dignitaries and invitees also took part in the tribute.

The ceremony commenced in the chapel with students from Buenos Aires English High School performing the Argentine national anthem. Following a reflection by the Bishop and speeches from several orators, Rubén de los Santos delivered a stirring trumpet rendition of “Ode to Joy,” the official anthem of the European Union.

The proceedings continued at the memorial dedicated to Norwegian sailors who lost their lives in World War II, whilst on route through the Buenos Aires port. This was then followed by a visit to the memorial wall honouring British community volunteers who perished in the conflict.

To conclude the event, Rabbi Eliahu Hamra delivered a moving address, reflecting on the significance of the occasion and the enduring impact of history.

This commemoration stands as a testament of recognition of the sacrifices made in pursuit of a freer world, ensuring that the legacy of these brave individuals continues to be honoured and remembered.
