President Javier Milei held a 45-minute meeting with Elon Musk, head of the United States’ new “Department of Government Efficiency” (DOGE), on Thursday afternoon. The tech billionaire was gifted a shiny chainsaw with his name engraved on the handle and Milei’s trademark “¡Viva La Libertad, carajo!” (Long Live Freedom, Damn It) along the blade.
Musk later went onstage with Milei at the Conservative Political Action Conference (CPAC), waving his personalized gift around.
“This is the chainsaw for bureaucracy! Yeah, chainsaw!” he said, pumping it above his head. Milei smiled and waved at the cheering crowd from behind — he’s set to address CPAC on Saturday afternoon.
According to a communiqué from the president’s office, Musk expressed renewed admiration for Milei’s policies during their meeting. They both “stressed the urgency of deregulating the economy and emphasized the importance of fighting the cultural battle on all fronts to combat visions such as that of John Maynard Keynes.”
Presidency Secretary Karina Milei — the president’s sister — Economy Minister Luis Caputo, Presidential Spokesman Manuel Adorni, and Foreign Minister Gerardo Werthein were also present at the meeting.
Milei and Musk have been expressing public support for each other since the president’s rise to Argentina’s top job, with Musk congratulating the libertarian on X when he won the 2023 elections. They have since met several times, with Milei visiting Musk’s Tesla factory last April.
Most recently, prior to Thursday’s meeting, Milei fiercely defended Musk in the aftermath of his apparent Nazi salute following President Donald Trump’s inauguration. “NAZI MY ASS,” he wrote on X. Onlookers around the world blasted the move as a Nazi or fascist salute.
Musk has said that he is “very interested” in Argentina’s lithium reserves, and the pair discussed organizing a “large event in Argentina” to promote their shared ideals.
The president is scheduled to meet with IMF Director Kristalina Georgieva later on Thursday.
