Elon Musk welcomes Milei’s Argentina 2023 presidential election victory

The multi-billionaire owner of X, Tesla and SpaceX reacted to the election results online

“Prosperity is ahead for Argentina.” That was the reaction of billionaire business magnate Elon Musk to far-right libertarian Javier Milei’s electoral victory in Argentina’s presidential run-off on Sunday.

Musk was replying to a post on X (formerly Twitter) by an account called “End Wokeness” that read: “Holy sh*t. Argentina just elected Javier Milei as their next president. History has been made today.”

The X account is dedicated to arguing with and “mocking” progressive politics, which it describes as “wokeness.”

The post was accompanied with a picture of Milei standing behind a yellow Gadsden flag of a snake, accompanied by the words “Don’t tread on me.” The banner is a symbol of the far right in the United States.

In recent weeks, key figures of the U.S. right have displayed support for Milei. In September, far-right ex-Fox News host Tucker Carlson traveled to Argentina to interview the economist. Roger Stone, a Republican political strategist who worked as an assessor for Donald Trump, wrote approvingly that Milei had “embraced his natural eccentricities to create an authenticity that none of his rivals can match.”

This isn’t the first time that Musk has taken to X, the social media platform he bought in late 2022, to air his views about Latin American politics. After Bolivian President Evo Morales was forced out in a coup in 2019, one X user accused Musk of orchestrating the coup to grab Bolivia’s vast lithium resources.

“We will coup whoever we want,” was Musk’s reply. “Deal with it.”
