Argentina has seventh-lowest suicide rate in the world, new study shows

The research also ranked Argentina as having the ninth lowest life expectancy, with an average life span of 75.4 years old

Argentina has been ranked seventh among a listing of countries with the lowest death rates by suicide. The country had a total of 6.6 deaths by suicide out of 100,000 people, men had a rate of 11.8, and women 2.2. Argentina tied with Slovakia in the ranking.

The study, by Canadian pharmaceutical company Universal Drugstore, analyzed global life expectancy rates. It also divided death rates by different causes such as infant mortality rates, death by preventable causes, death from treatable causes, death by cancer, and death from suicide. The research compared the suicide rates of 36 countries for which they have OECD data.

The lowest suicide rate was reported in Peru, with a total of 1.8 deaths per 100,000 people. While South Korea was listed as the highest, with 24.1 per 100,000 individuals dying by suicide. This ranking of countries with the highest suicide rate was followed by Lithuania, Slovenia, Japan, and Hungary. Across every country studied, male suicide was much more common than female.

Life expectancy was also ranked in the listing, with Japan coming in at the top of the list — a life expectancy of 84.5 years. The lowest life expectancy was in South Africa, with individuals living an average of 62.3 years old. Life expectancy data included a total of 47 countries, with the average life expectancy coming in at 78.1 years.

The study implies that economic factors play a significant role in longevity, as the majority of the 10 countries listed as having the lowest life expectancy are identified by the World Bank as middle-income economies. However, all 10 of the countries with the longest life expectancy are high-income countries.

The research also noted that life expectancy can be affected by a variety of elements such as genetics, diet, environment, healthcare, and socioeconomic factors. It cited the Japanese diet and food quality, as well as genetics, as reasons for the country’s long life expectancy.

Argentina has the ninth lowest life expectancy out of all of the countries studied, with an average life expectancy of 75.4 years. Men in Argentina have an average life expectancy of 72.2 years and women 78.6 years. Mexico is tied with Argentina for ninth place.

Rankings of causes of death were broken down into smaller subsections as well, with Argentina listed as having the tenth highest infant mortality rate — 6.1 deaths per 1,000 live births.

Argentina was also listed as having the 10th-lowest number of cancer-related deaths. There are a total of 176.8 cancer-related deaths per 100,000 individuals — 222.1 for men and 151.5 for women.
