Former One Direction member Liam Payne died on Wednesday afternoon after falling from the third floor of the CasaSur hotel in the Buenos Aires neighborhood of Palermo.
“Our role was to head there quickly, give medical attention, and try to resuscitate him, but his injuries were incompatible with life,” said Alberto Crescenti, head of the Buenos Aires emergency services SAME, on the television channel TN.
Emergency services confirmed Payne’s identity by checking his passport, which the Herald has verified.

Crescenti explained that the 31-year-old singer had fallen into the hotel’s internal patio and warned to wait for more details from the autopsy “to not get ahead of ourselves.”

“However, based on what the team saw, there was apparently a cranial fracture and extremely serious injuries that led to his immediate death,” he said, adding that Payne was dead when the emergency services arrived.
He also did not confirm if Payne was with anyone at the time of his death. Hotel staff reported to police that he checked in alone on October 10. According to the Herald’s sister publication Ambito, he came to Buenos Aires with Niall Horan, also a former One Direction member, who performed at the Movistar Arena.
City Police sources told the Herald that officers received a 911 call and went to the hotel “where there were reports of an aggressive man who could be under the influence of drugs or alcohol.” Forensic scientists were sent to the scene at 7:30 p.m., but as of Wednesday evening, authorities had no conclusive evidence regarding the circumstances of Payne’s fall.
Before the incident, Payne posted a selfie to Snapchat, together with the text “Lovely day in Argentina,” although it was not clear when the photo itself was taken.
The singer’s body was removed from the hotel at 8.38 p.m. and taken away in a fire truck. Outside the hotel, around 50 anxious fans stood vigil, some of them crying. Some set up an impromptu shrine to Payne. Three young women bought candles from the supermarket opposite the hotel and handed them out, before singing the One Direction Ballad, “If I Could Fly.”
“If I could fly, I’d be coming right back home to you,” they sang into the darkening spring evening.
The CasaSur hotel is in the chic Palermo Hollywood district, an upscale area known for restaurants and night life, and popular among international tourists.
