UK’s David Cameron, Milei talk British investment, Malvinas ‘solutions’ at Davos

The meeting took place during Milei’s visit to the annual World Economic Forum meeting, his first international trip as president

President Javier Milei and Foreign Minister Diana Mondino discussed British investment in Argentina and “solutions” to the dispute over the Malvinas Islands in a meeting with Foreign Secretary David Cameron at the World Economic Forum meeting on Wednesday.

“It was an excellent meeting, very cordial,” Milei said. “We talked about expanding commercial ties, of the support they will give us at the International Monetary Fund, and how to promote British investments in Argentina.”

He added that the parties had “established the Malvinas as a point on the agenda with the Foreign Ministry, to advance towards solutions on the issue.”

Milei’s staff did not offer further detail on what solutions, if any, were discussed during the meeting. The president’s team and the British Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office did not respond to requests for comment.

In September, Milei told Radio Continental that “Argentina and the United Kingdom must reach an agreement” without overlooking the opinion of the islanders, adding that he would advocate for a solution similar to China and the UK’s 1997 Hong Kong agreement.

The president is currently in Davos, Switzerland, for the World Economic Forum’s annual meeting. He gave a special address to the audience of international business and political leaders and is scheduled to meet with IMF head Kristalina Georgieva on Wednesday afternoon.

Cameron, a former British Prime Minister, is also meeting with US Secretary of State Antony Blinken, Ukraine’s Foreign Minister Dmytro Kuleba, and Bill Gates over the course of the summit.

Editorial disclaimer

Although the UK refers to the territory as the “Falklands Islands,” Argentina strongly contests this name. The Buenos Aires Herald refers to the islands as the Malvinas Islands.
