Liliana Franco U.S. President-elect Donald Trump has invited Argentine President Javier Milei to attend his inauguration ceremony in Washington DC on January 20, Argentine government sources told Herald sister publication Ámbito.
The administration is currently working to rearrange Milei’s schedule in light of this invitation. The president had already committed to being present at the World Economic Forum in Davos around the same time, part of a trip that also includes visits to Tel Aviv and Jerusalem, in Israel.
According to members of the Milei administration, this invitation — which sidesteps the normal protocol of these types of events — to see Trump sworn in as United States president in front of the Capitol is a new gesture that shows the “great personal and ideological affinity” these two leaders share.
It should be noted that Milei met Trump for the first time in February 2024, before the Republican’s presidential campaign had begun, at the backstage of the Conservative Political Action Conference (CPAC), the most prestigious right-wing organization in the United States. The pair hugged and praised each other.
Trump has made some gestures that reveal that he has a particular consideration for Milei. For instance, he invited the Argentine president to the annual CPAC meeting that took place in his Florida Mar-a-Lago mansion right after he was elected. This was done as a way for the two to see each other without breaking protocol, which mandates that the U.S. president-elect first must meet with other foreign leaders, such as the British Prime Minister.
Another important event took place earlier this month, when CPAC held its first gathering in Argentina. Lara Trump, daughter-in-law of the president-elect and of the strategists of his campaign, was one of the keynote speakers.
