An Argentine woman was killed in Jerusalem on Monday in a shooting Israeli authorities said was carried out by “terrorists.” Sara Voloj de Mendelson, known as “Sarita,” was born in Argentina but had lived in Israel since her early childhood, members of the Jewish community said.
“Argentina energetically condemns the brutal terrorist attack perpetrated in Jerusalem, which took the lives of innocent men and women, among them Argentine citizen Sara Mendelson,” the Argentine foreign ministry said in a statement.
The communiqué went on to express “deep solidarity” with Israel, as well as their rejection of “any expression of terrorism and violence” and “antisemitism.”
Two men opened fire at a bus stop on Monday morning, killing six people and injuring 21, some of whom had serious injuries, according to the Israeli government. The attackers were killed on the spot by an Israeli soldier and other civilians. According to the Israeli foreign ministry, the attackers were “Palestinian terrorists.”
Argentine ambassador in Israel Axel Wahnish said he “deeply lamented” the death of Mendelson, 57. “I just spoke with her family to express my solidarity and condolences, which I extend to all those affected by this terrible attack,” he said.
Eliahu Hamra, rabbi of the AMIA Jewish community center, confirmed the news of Mendelson’s passing. “This new attack puts us back in mourning and confronts us, once again, with the most sinister face of horror and disregard for human life.”
According to Israeli author Hen Mazzig, Mendelson worked at the Bnei Akiva religious youth movement and was on her way to work when the attack happened.
Local media reported that dozens of people gathered to mourn Mendelson at her funeral on Monday. “Sarita, my dear wife, you were all energy of kindness and a straight path,” said her husband, Shlomi Mendelson, during the ceremony, according to Israel National News. “You were admired by all, everyone in their own way. Everyone who knew you is weeping.”
