Francisco Cerúndolo will lead the Argentine tennis charge as the Wimbledon Championships gets underway in London. Seeded 16th, he is one of five male players from Argentina competing, as well as female “lucky loser” Solana Sierra.

The 26-year-old plays on Monday in the first round facing Portuguese qualifier Nuno Borges, whom he already beat in the same round in 2023 at this same tournament. If he advances, the Argentine could meet British player Billy Harris or Dušan Lajović of Serbia.

Buenos Aires born Cerúndolo will be hoping to shake off some mixed results in his two Grand Slam appearances in 2025. He reached the third round of the Australian Open, eventually losing out to hometown hero Alex de Minaur.

In May, he fell at the first hurdle at Roland Garros in the French Open, exiting early on the clay courts to Canada’s Gabriel Diallo. The premature departure was a bitter pill to swallow for Cerúndolo, who aimed to improve on his 2024 performance where he reached the fourth round, being knocked out of the tournament by then-world number one Novak Djokovic.

However, his form has reached higher peaks in non-grand slam events. At his home tournament, the 2025 Argentina Open, he defeated top seed Alexander Zverev en route to the final, where he eventually lost in straight sets to João Fonseca of Brazil.

Argentina’s other hopes at Wimbledon

Meanwhile in Tuesday’s action, Sebastián Báez will have the difficult task of facing British player Jack Draper, the current world number four. Also from Buenos Aires, 24-year-old Báez reached the second round of the tournament on his first appearance in 2022, but has yet to match that feat since.

Mariano Navone will face Denis Shapovalov, who was a semi-finalist in the 2021 tournament. Francisco Comesaña will face Corentin Moutet while Tomás Etcheverry battles another Brit in Jack Pinnington Jones. 26-year-old Camilo Ugo Carabelli will face Marcos Giron of the United States.

There was set to be no Argentine representation in the women’s draw, as Solana Sierra, who had a chance in qualifying, lost in the second round. However, she later entered as a “lucky loser” and will play Australian Olivia Gadecki.
