It was a nightmare day two for Argentine tennis stars, with five of the 12 representatives exiting the tournament, including top-ranked ATP singles Argentine Francisco Cerúndolo.
Cerúndolo, 18th in the world rankings, was shocked by unseeded Canadian Gabriel Diallo, who beat him 7-5, 6-3, 6-4 in just over two hours of play. The Argentine struggled to impose himself throughout the match, unable to contend with Diallo’s strong serve and powerful groundstrokes.
It comes as a bitter pill to swallow for Cerúndolo, who aimed to improve on his 2024 performance at the French Open where he reached the fourth round, being knocked out of the tournament by then-world number one Novak Djokovic.
Another who was unable to improve on past performances was former top-ranked Argentine Sebastián Báez (38). The 24-year-old is going through an irregular season, mixing title-winning form at Rio de Janeiro with lackluster performances at Masters 1000 tournaments such as Madrid or Rome.
Báez, who’s yet to make it past the second round in the French Open, fell to Serbian Miomir Kecmanovic (46) after going ahead two-sets to nil, losing 7-6, 7-6, 4-6, 2-6, 2-6 and making an eye opening 76 unforced errors.
In the women’s singles draw, Julia Riera (202 WTA singles ranked) couldn’t extend her form after coming through the qualifying draw. She battled fiercely against world number 12 Elena Rybakina, from Kazakhstan, but ended up losing 6-1, 4-6, 6-4.
“I’m very angry right now,” she told journalists after the match, “I felt I was close, that I had the chance to win. But I have to take the good things, I was really close to beating a great player even though I never really felt like I was playing great. It’s the lessons I have to take with me.”
Back in the men’s draw, Tomás Etcheverry (53), from La Plata, faced Greek star Stefanos Tsitsipas (20), one of the favorites to win the title at the Parisian event. The Argentine lost 5-7, 3-6, 4-6 in just over two and a half hours of play.
Camilo Ugo Carabelli (51) closed the bad day for Argentine players, falling 6-4, 6-1, 7-5 against Spain’s Jaume Munar (57) after 2 hours and 40 minutes of hard battle.
