Australian Open: Cerúndolo, Etcheverry, Diaz Acosta into round 2

The trio became the first Argentines to win at the 2025 tournament

Argentine tennis stars finally have liftoff at the 2025 Australian Open, with wins for Francisco Cerúndolo, Tomás Etcheverry and Facundo Diaz Acosta on Tuesday. The trio are the sole survivors of the 11 Argentines that featured in the first round of the men’s and women’s singles draws.

Cerúndolo (31st ATP singles ranked) overcame Kazakh Alexander Bublik (37) by 7-6 (1), 6-3, 6-2. It was the first clash between the two, with the Argentine taking advantage of his rival’s erratic shot selection to wrap it in just under two hours of play.

He’ll face 2024 Buenos Aires Open winner Diaz Acosta (73) in the second round, who had a harder fight than his compatriot. Belgian Zizou Bergs (60) took him to the fifth set in a four-hour battle that saw the Argentine coming back from two sets to one down to win 6-7(5), 6-4, 1-6, 6-3, 6-4.

They’re level on the head-to-head tally. Cerúndolo’s 2-1 advantage in the Challenger tour balances out Díaz Acosta’s victory in the 2024 Argentina Open, their only meeting in ATP-level tournaments.

Etcheverry was the last Argentine to play. He struggled in the first set, but was able to turn the match around, beating Italian Flavio Cobolli (32) by 6-7 (8), 6-3, 7-5, 6-1 in three hours and thirty minutes. Etcheverry is looking to defend his record from the 2024 Australian Open, where he made it to the third round, falling to Serbian legend Novak Djokovic.

He’ll face U.S. player Marcos Giron (46) next, who beat Germany’s Yannick Hanfmann (95) by 2-6, 7-5, 6-1, 7-5. The U.S. player  won their only previous meeting, a 6-4, 6-3 win at the round of 16 of the 2022 San Diego Open.

The good news ends there for the Argentines, with Camilo Ugo Carabelli (95) losing 4-6, 7-6 (3), 6-3, 5-7, 6-4 to Learner Tien (122) from the U.S. Francisco Comesaña (85) fell 6-2, 3-6, 7-6 (4), 4-6, 6-4 to Germany’s Daniel Altmaier (93) and Federico Coria (97) lost 6-3, 6-7 (3-7), 4-6, 7-5, 6-1 to Tristan Boyer (134) from the U.S.

They join two more Argentines who were knocked out on Monday: Sebastián Báez (28), defeated by Arthur Cazauz (78), and Mariano Navone (47), who lost to Jack Draper (18).

In the women’s draw, Lourdes Carlé (95 WTA singles ranked) lost to U.S. player Amanda Anisimova by 6-2, 6-3 in just over one hour and a quarter, while Julia Riera (146) put Brazilian Bia Haddad Maia (17) against the ropes, but ended up losing 6-4 5-7, 2-6 in a two hour and 40-minute battle.

They joined Rosario’s Nadia Podoroska who lost 6-1, 6-1 to Czech Karolina Muchova on Monday.
