Argentine football club San Lorenzo announced on Friday that head coach Miguel Ángel Russo was departing, amid rumors of a move to Boca Juniors.
“San Lorenzo and [Russo] have come to an agreement to conclude the link between them, which was set to run until December 31, 2025,” the club confirmed via their X account. The club added that while the contract is now settled, Russo had already bid farewell to the first team players on Tuesday and “unilaterally” left his position.
The Cuervos added that they had demanded Russo pay for exiting the contract early, and asked him to waive their debt with him and his staff.
“All terms agreed and the payment received, the deal was signed and Russo’s departure confirmed,” the club wrote.
Russo’s departure follows weeks of rumors in the Argentine sporting press about a possible move to Boca Juniors. The coach departs San Lorenzo after a successful stint, having reached the 2025 Torneo Apertura semifinals. Russo proved a steady hand for the club at a troublesome time.
President Marcelo Moretti was accused of fraud after footage of him allegedly taking a bribe went viral in April. The club has also been serving a transfer ban from FIFA due to forfeited payments in previous transfers.
At 69, Russo is one of South America’s most successful working coaches. Across his 35-year career, he’s won several titles in Argentina with a myriad of clubs, as well as a league title in Colombia with Millonarios. He now looks set for a third period leading the Xeneize. His two previous stints proved highly successful, winning the 2007 Copa Libertadores in his first and the 2020 Primera División and 2020 Copa de la Liga titles in the second.
