Uruguayan star striker Edinson Cavani confirmed on Monday he wants to retire while playing with Boca Juniors.
“I said I was going to end my career in Boca and I plan on respecting that,” he said to online outlet Farandula Show.
While holidaying in Punta del Este, a beach city in his native Uruguay, the 37-year-old forward who scored 20 goals in his second season with Boca, insisted he is delighted to play for the storied Buenos Aires team.
“As I said the first day, it’s an incredible experience, one I’m lucky to have. It’s a big responsibility, but I enjoy it. That’s why I always try to give my best to make everything work,” he added.
Cavani arrived at Boca in 2023 on a free deal from Spanish team Valencia. Having initially struggled to adapt, he quickly became one of Boca’s best performers. In October, he extended his deal with the Xeneize through December 2026.
The 2024 season wasn’t the best for Boca and El Matador, as he is affectionately known. Boca never got close to the Liga Profesional title race, and exited the Copa Sudamericana in October after losing to Brazilian rival Cruzeiro. The team sacked head coach Diego Martínez after a shocking home turf defeat against River last September, and then was ousted by Vélez Sarsfield in the Copa Argentina semifinal in a seven-goals thrilling match.
“We have to prepare well for 2025,” said Cavani about what is coming for Boca. The team is set to compete in the Copa Libertadores and the new-format Club World Club, as well as the Argentine league and cup competitions.
“We’re doing a good job,” he added.
