Got your eyes set on a job abroad? Fancy yourself fluent in the tongue of the Bard? Now’s your chance to prove it.

Oxford University Press (OUP) launched its Advanced Test of English in Argentina on Thursday. The exam will allow people over 16 to demonstrate, for professional and academic purposes, that they have an advanced level of English.

Successful completion of the exam grants a C1 certificate within the Common European Framework of Reference (CEFR), which is considered to be “advanced.” This means an individual can communicate effectively at a professional and academic level on a wide variety of topics. Over 600 professional and academic institutions, among them the Universitat de Barcelona and Humboldt University, recognize the OUP test worldwide.

Students applying to the University of Oxford are required to present a C1 English certificate. The exam was developed by OUP, the university’s publishing department. It allows linguists to demonstrate a more advanced level of English than the Oxford Test of English and Oxford Test of English for Schools, which are already available in Argentina.

The exam is done online and takes approximately 2 hours to complete. Although it is conducted remotely, applicants must register to take the test at one of the university’s authorized centers. There are no set dates for the test and no requirements, meaning applicants can sign up and take the examination at any time.

There are currently 13 centers in Argentina:

  • Buenos Aires City – 3
  • Buenos Aires province – 5 (3 in Greater Buenos Aires, as well as Mar del Plata and Necochea)
  • Entre Ríos (Paraná)
  • Santa Fe – 2 (Rosario and Santa Fe City)
  • Chaco (Resistencia)
  • San Juan

Three further centers are scheduled to open soon in Córdoba, Tierra del Fuego, and Buenos Aires City.

According to the English Proficiency Index conducted by international education company Education First, Argentina ranks number 28, within a group of countries considered to have “high proficiency,” the second tier ranked below “very high proficiency.” Argentina is the nation in Latin America that speaks English most fluently, followed by Honduras (31), Costa Rica (38), and Uruguay (39).
