LLA deputy candidate proposes bill so men can ‘give up fatherhood’

Lilia Lemoine said that they shouldn’t be forced to pay child support if they don’t want to be parents

La Libertad Avanza (LLA) national deputy candidate Lilia Lemoine proposed a polemic bill that would allow men to “give up fatherhood” if they don’t want to pay for child support.

“When a woman finds out she is pregnant, she would have 15 days to notify the father and let him decide if he wants to support that child or not,” Lemoine explained during an interview with YouTube streaming channel Neura Media. She said that this would be the first bill she’d present if elected to Congress for the coalition backing far-right candidate Javier Milei.

According to Lemoine, “it’s not fair” for a man to have to economically support a child until they turn 18 if they had never intended to become a parent.

“If a woman has the privilege of being able to kill their children and renounce motherhood, then why are men forced by law to support a child?,” she said, referencing the legalization of abortion that was approved in 2020.

Lemoine said that a man could be unaware that they had gotten a woman pregnant if she told him that she was on the pill or if she had “pierced the condom.”

“There are many women who want to hook a man up and do this kind of thing; they take advantage of them in the heat of the moment. My grandmother told me that; she was a nurse,” Lemoine said.

Asked about what would happen if the man didn’t use protection during intercourse, Lemoine said that that would be “his responsibility.”

“If the man doesn’t use protection and the woman is unaware, that is rape. The woman should then report the rape and take the ‘day after’ pill,” she said, adding that this would be simple to prove before the judiciary.

According to a 2022 report done by the Buenos Aires Province Women, Gender and Diversity Ministry, over 66% of women with children who are separated from the fathers don’t receive child support or only do so sporadically.
