Former WW2 volunteer Ronald David Scott dies age 107

Former World War 2 (WW2) volunteer Ronald David Scott passed away on April 17, age 107. Born in Buenos Aires on October 20, 1917, Ronny was one of many Argentine volunteers who joined the British Armed Forces during the conflict. He flew with the 794 Naval Air Squadron, part of the Royal Navy’s Fleet Air Arm.

Together with Anne Hume, who celebrated her 100th birthday in March, they were the last two Argentine WW2 volunteers.

Thanks to the books written by Claudio Meunier, which recorded the exploits of WW2 volunteers, the story of Ronny and many others became known to a wider audience.

Award-winning British filmmaker Alex Bescoby made a documentary about Ronny. His film, Buena Onda: The Tale of Ronnie Scott, was released in March 2019. In 2021 Lord Ashcroft wrote about Scott in The Mail on Sunday newspaper.

His funeral took place at the Buenos Aires British Cemetery on Saturday April 26. With military precision, his coffin was carried by the Buenos Aires Scottish Guards into the chapel at 11 a.m., where Carlos Amarillo, from the Methodist Church, conducted the service which was attended by a large crowd of family and friends.

The four speakers at the service were Tim Lough, from the Royal British Legion, ex Buenos Aires Branch; British Embassy Défense Attache Sally Cawdery; Gunther Schuster, a friend of Ronny’s; and Roger Scott, Ronny’s son.

At the end of the service, the bagpiper played Amazing Grace and then the bugler played the Last Post.

Ronny is survived by two sons and three grandchildren.
