Sergio Berni violently attacked in protest over bus driver’s death

BA province security minister suffered multiple fractures and was evacuated by BA City police

Minister of Security of Buenos Aires province Sergio Berni suffered skull and cheekbone fractures after being attacked at a bus terminal today by protesting drivers of the 620 line.

The incident happened in the Lomas del Mirador district. Berni arrived at 11:47 a.m. accompanied by the Buenos Aires Minister of Transportation, Jorge D’Onofrio, and a policeman when he was attacked with shovels, stones, and protestors’ fists. Moments later, the minister looked as if he might lose his balance.

They were at the intersection of Juan Manuel de Rosas Avenue and General Paz, blocking traffic to demand justice for the murder of fellow 620 bus driver Daniel Barrientos this morning.

The minister later spoke outside the Churruca Hospital, where he received care for his injuries — a fractured skull and cheekbone as well as multiple cuts from the attack.

He said that while “the City Police was following protocol” when they rescued him from the bus drivers’ attack, their actions “complicated things.”

“I asked them not to move forward because things were being resolved and we had the situation under control. We had already agreed to a meeting,” he said about the actions of Buenos Aires city police, which resulted in eight agents being injured.

Berni said that he will not press charges against the drivers who assaulted him.

“I’m okay, one more blow is not going to make a difference,” he said in a press conference. “The fact that a Buenos Aires province man is dead is more painful than the beating I got.”

After evacuating Berni, city police went on to violently disband the protest with tear gas and batons, with videos circulating on social media of an agent hitting a bus driver with a shield.
