BA City to increase subway fares by 359% in April

One ride will cost AR$574, up from the current AR$125. Fares will rise again in May and June

The Buenos Aires City government announced on Wednesday that it has called a public hearing to approve subway fare hikes that would be applied from April onwards. If approved, one ride will cost AR$574 (US$0.67 at the official rate, US$0.50 at the MEP rate), a 359% increase from the current AR$125. Fares are set to rise to AR$667 in May, then AR$757 in June.

The public hearing to confirm the increase is scheduled for March 15.

The premetro, a light rail line in the outskirts of Buenos Aires that connects with subway line E, will rise to AR$201 in April, AR$233.45 in May, and AR$265 in June.

As with buses and trains, subway users must register their SUBE card by April 1. Otherwise, they will be charged even higher fares of AR$859 for subway tickets and AR$301 for the premetro.

Passengers automatically receive monthly discounts that progress with the number of trips they take. These are of 20% after 20 trips, 30% after 30 trips, and 40% after 40 trips. Pensioners, students, and welfare recipients will keep their fare discounts.

According to the government, the raise reflects a rise in operating costs. Subway fares have already risen twice in 2024, from AR$80 to AR$110 in January, then to the current AR$125 in February.
