Pope Francis’ vigil began on Wednesday in the Vatican and will continue until Friday. His coffin will be sealed that evening in preparation for his funeral and burial on Saturday.
Eleven thousand kilometers away, people in Buenos Aires are also gathering in different places across the city to bid their final farewell to the late pontiff.
The Herald compiled some of the key masses and homages that will be carried out in the Argentine capital in case you want to pay your respects. These events appear in chronological order, from earliest to latest.
San Lorenzo football club
- The San Antonio Oratorium, which belongs to the San Lorenzo football club, will hold a mass on Wednesday at 7.15 p.m to honor Pope Francis, its most famous supporter.
- The service will be held at the club’s original foundation site, at México 4050, Almagro.
Buenos Aires Cathedral
- The church will hold a mass Saturday at 10 a.m., five hours after the start of Francis’ funeral in Rome.
- The cathedral is located at San Martín 27, in front of Plaza de Mayo.
Vigils and marches
- Parishes and social movements will conduct a caravan around Plaza de Mayo following Saturday’s service.
- The informal workers union UTEP will hold a vigil outside of the cathedral on Friday evening in anticipation of the funeral.
- The Virgen de los Milagros de Caacupé parish will have a lunch at Plaza de Mayo at 1 p.m. They will also do a walk-around of the places the pope used to visit at 2 p.m.
Flores Museum
- The Flores Neighborhood Museum, where Jorge Bergoglio was born and raised, will pay homage to him on Saturday at 4.30 p.m.
- The event will consist of a talk about the pope’s time in the neighborhood and a showing of some of his personal items.
- The museum is located at Ramón Falcón 2207. Entry is free for all.
