Milei to declare seven days of mourning over the death of Pope Francis

The Office of the President issued a statement expressing deep sorrow over the loss of Pope Francis

President Javier Milei will declare a seven-day mourning period following the passing of Pope Francis, Jorge Mario Bergoglio, who made history as the first Argentine to head the Catholic Church, starting in 2013.

Shortly after the news emerged on Easter Monday, the Office of the President issued a statement expressing deep sorrow over the loss of Pope Francis. “We send our condolences to the Bergoglio family,” the press release stated. “The President stands with all those who profess the Catholic faith and recognize the Supreme Pontiff as a spiritual leader during this sad time.”

In a personal statement shared on the social media platform X, President Javier Milei expressed his condolences: “With deep sorrow, I learned this sad morning that Pope Francis has passed away. Despite differences that seem minor now, it was a true honor to have known him in his kindness and wisdom. As President, as an Argentine, and fundamentally, as a man of faith, I bid farewell to the Holy Father.”

Manuel Adorni, spokesman for the Casa Rosada, also gave his own tribute on social media, stating: “Pope Francis has passed away. Spiritual leader and guide of millions. The President will declare seven days of mourning for the death of the Holy Father.”

“Surely we all remember what we felt when we found out that the Chair of Saint Peter would be occupied by an Argentine,” Worship and Civilization Secretary Nahuel Sotelo announced on his personal account on X.

“In his years of papacy, he built bridges between cultures, beliefs, and hearts, reminding us that true greatness lies in selfless service and mercy. May his legacy of fraternity, dialogue, and peace continue to inspire all, beyond borders and religions.”

This story has been updated to include new statements as they are released.
