Milei scorns journalist on social media over Biden quitting presidential bid

The Argentine president shared several posts on X that criticized the US incumbent, although no official comment from the government has been issued yet

While the Argentine government has not commented yet on US President Joe Biden’s decision to step down from the presidential race, Javier Milei has already shared posts from government officials and libertarian “troll” accounts who railed against journalist Marcelo Longobardi for favoring Biden and calling Donald Trump “a danger to the world.”

“Trump is a gangster, an immoral [person], a danger to the world,” Longobardi says in a clip shared by several libertarian accounts on X. “Trump is not a liberal like President Milei believes. He is an ultraconservative who, like all current politicians, is a little lost,” he adds. Longobardi is also heard saying Biden “is not as bad as Americans believe.”

One of the X posts Milei shared on his account describes Longobardi’s words as “the worst opinion you’ve heard in your life.” The post was originally made by Daniel Parisini, the host of an ultra-libertarian streaming show, also known as “Gordo Dan” in social media.

While he doesn’t hold a formal position in the administration, Parisini is close to the government, particularly to Milei’s top advisor Santiago Caputo, and has recently been spotted by the Herald as he was walking into Casa Rosada.

“Dan is everything and nothing at the same time,” said a source from the ruling coalition La Libertad Avanza, who has direct contact with Milei’s inner circle.

Milei also shared a post from anonymous libertarian account @PregoneroL with the same clip of Longobardi’s opinion, calling him a chanta, an Argentine slang word for someone who is deceitful.

The Argentine president has been vocal about his support and admiration for Trump on several occasions. The two had an informal meeting during a conservative event in February. “I love him because he loves Trump,” the former U.S. president said during a campaign speech days later.

Government officials’ posts again Biden

Although no high-ranking official has officially commented on Biden’s withdrawal from the campaign, Milei’s Digital Communication Director Juan Pablo Carreira — known on social media as Juan Doe — made several posts on X analyzing the decision and criticizing VP Kamala Harris as the new democrat contender for the election.

“In the end, the ‘crazy ones’ who five years ago said Biden wasn’t well were right. The ‘crazy ones’ always end up being right,” he wrote on Sunday night. He also compared Biden to former Argentine President Alberto Fernández, saying “the good thing is that after an Alberto comes a Milei.”

Buenos Aires city deputy Ramiro Marra, one of the heads of La Libertad Avanza’s bloc in the Legislature, also questioned Biden’s decision.

“After hundreds of thousands of people voted for Biden in the primaries, it is completely irresponsible that now a few conventional delegates are choosing another [candidate],” Marra wrote. “It’s a manipulation of the electorate for their own gain.”

Ever since taking office, Milei has consistently attacked journalists who have been critical of his administration, calling them “liars and serial slanderers,” as well as accusing them of receiving bribes. The Inter-American Press Association recently stated its concern over Milei’s “increasing verbal attacks” and asked him to show “tolerance towards criticism and dissent” to ensure international standards on freedom of expression.

Last week, Presidential spokesman Manuel Adorni said he would be limiting access to the Casa Rosada’s press room: “We will have an elite press room, only for journalists who can prove they deserve to be close to the president,” he said.
