Fernández visits Brazil to celebrate 200 years of bilateral relations

Argentina’s president will meet Lula da Silva at the Planalto Palace

President Alberto Fernández traveled to Brazil this Monday on the invitation of his Brazilian counterpart Luiz Inácio “Lula” da Silva, to celebrate 200 years of bilateral relations between the two countries.

His official schedule starts at 11:30 a.m. (Argentina time) at the Planalto Palace, the government’s headquarters, located in Brasilia, the national capital, where he and Lula will meet. Argentine Foreign Minister, Santiago Cafiero, and Ambassador to Brazil Daniel Scioli will also be there, the Argentine government said in a press release.

During the afternoon, Fernández will meet Brazil’s Senate President, Rodrigo Pacheco, at the national Congress, before ending at the Supreme Federal Court with a meeting with its head, Rosa Weber.

“Today I will receive in Brasilia my friend and president of Argentina, @alferdez, in celebration of the 200 years of diplomatic relations between our countries,” Lula tweeted on Monday afternoon.

This will be the two presidents’ fifth meeting since the start of the year. Fernández was in Brasilia on January 1 when Lula took office. The pair held a bilateral meeting in May, and met again at the gathering of the Union of South American Nations (UNASUR, by its Spanish acronym) at the start of June. Lula also traveled to Buenos Aires for the Community of Latin American and Caribbean States (CELAC, by its Spanish acronym) summit that took place in January.
