Milei offers Macri custom-made ‘country representative’ role in possible government

Far-right libertarian presidential hopeful Javier Milei said on Friday that, if elected, he would offer a custom-made role to former President Mauricio Macri.

“Macri would have a prominent role as a representative of Argentina,” Milei, who was the most-voted candidate in the primaries, said on Friday in an interview with Radio Mitre.

“He would have a role above the Foreign Affairs Ministry. A country representative, I don’t know how to define it, the role would have to be created. He is someone who can open markets for the country.”

Milei, who won the election with an “anti-caste” spiel against all politicians, spoke highly of Macri, who called him after the primaries: “I was very pleasantly surprised that he not only asked me about economy, but also showed a human side that I did not expect given the bond we have.”

Macri, a founding member of opposition coalition Juntos por el Cambio (JxC) that has Patricia Bullrich as its presidential candidate, has yet to respond publicly to the proposal.

Laura Alonso, former JxC deputy and head of the anti-corruption office during Macri’s administration, rejected the possibility. “President Macri is a member of the PRO [party] and Juntos por el Cambio [coalition],” she said on Twitter. “Trying to exploit his figure politically by third parties is not right.” She added that Macri is working for Bullrich’s candidacy, and not Milei’s.

On Thursday, the former President spoke about Milei’s proposed austerity measures, which the libertarian calls “a chainsaw plan” and encompass the elimination of eleven ministries, the country’s main scientific institution, and the cinema institute, among others.

“The chainsaw is needed but it’s not the only thing you need, sometimes you need a scalpel, sometimes you need tweezers,” Macri said. “With all due respect. Libertarians, Milei, are part of the change that is coming. But you need experience.”

After Milei’s proposal, Civic Coalition-ARI and JxC member Elisa Carrió quit her candidacy to become a Mercosur Parliament deputy.

Carrió had already been upset by the relationship between Macri and Milie. “I don’t think we have to go to the far right; I’m afraid of an outbreak of violence. There are people who believe that the solution is to go to the extreme right and [unleash] repression; I don’t”, Carrió said a few weeks ago in an interview.
