Larreta announces Santilli and Posse as BA province candidates

The JxC presidential hopeful will share a ticket with with Jujuy governor Morales

Buenos Aires city mayor Horacio Rodríguez Larreta, a presidential hopeful with opposition coalition Juntos por el Cambio (JxC), announced Saturday that national deputy Diego Santilli and San Isidro mayor Gustavo Posse will be his candidates for governor and vice governor of Buenos Aires province, respectively.

Flanked by his presidential running-mate Gerardo Morales at an event in Acassuso, Rodríguez Larreta detailed the rest of his list for key Buenos Aires province positions. The names are a mixture of politicians from his own party, PRO, and other parties within the coalition, including the Unión Cívica Radical (UCR), Coalición Cívica (CC), and other smaller groupings.

“This is the team that will win the province and change the lives of the people of BA province for good,” he said.

Libertarian José Luis Espert, whose Avanza Libertad party joined JxC earlier this month, will top the list of national senators, alongside Cyntia Hotton of the conservative Más Valores party.

His national deputy candidates for BA province are Republican Peronist Miguel Ángel Pichetto, PRO ally Silvia Lospennato, and CC members Mónica Frade, and Mariana Stilman.

Lawyer Flor Arietto and current BA provincial Senator Claudia Rucci will be included on the list for provincial senators, he added.

Rodríguez Larreta also addressed Friday’s announcement that ruling coalition Unión por la Patria would field Economy Minister Sergio Massa as its sole presidential candidate, with Chief of Staff Agustín Rossi as his VP.

“Massa running for president changes nothing for us,” the Buenos Aires mayor said. “It’s Kirchnerism with whatever mask they choose to wear […] Massa is [outgoing president] Alberto Fernández and [outgoing vice president] Cristina Kirchner’s candidate. They all represent a government that failed. They’re all the same. A government with over 100% inflation that all Argentines are suffering.”

Morales also took the mic. “Sergio [Massa] is to change what Alberto was in 2019: the same people are behind it all,” he said. “They might seek to put some makeup on their failures.” He also described his peronist opponents as “those who preach the culture of violence and corruption.”

Larreta announced on Friday that Jujuy governor Gerardo Morales would be his candidate for Vice President. He described Morales, who is also UCR president, as “a brave man” who “does not waver when it comes to defending rights, while always trying to avoid situations of violence.”

The nomination sparked controversy: it happened just days after protests over a contested reform to Jujuy’s provincial constitution ended with a violent police crackdown that sparked the condemnation of human rights groups.
