Ex-president Cristina Kirchner lambasted President Javier Milei’s statements against feminism and the LGBTQIA+ community at the World Economic Forum in Davos, saying he “insulted, attacked, and defamed women and homosexuals.”
In a lengthy X post published on Thursday, Kirchner said, “Argentines already have enough divisions to add differences over gender and sexual preferences on top of it all.”
“Tell the guy who writes your speeches […] to have a little more imagination and broaden his horizons because this time he went too far,” Kirchner wrote.
Kirchner hypothesized that Milei’s 2025 speech in Davos targeted social issues because “repeating” his 2024 defense of free-market transactions with no state regulations would place him at odds with United States President Donald Trump “who’ll put tariffs on all ‘heroes’ who don’t produce in the U.S. or don’t do what he wants.”
“Meanwhile, you should ask your friend Elon Musk to introduce you to Scott Bessent, Treasury secretary appointed by Trump,” Kirchner continued. “You’ll need him if you want to close a new deal with the IMF.” She pointed out that Bessent is married to another man and has two children, marking the contrast between that and Milei’s statements.
The ex-president also criticized Milei for “not owning up” to his statements, given that he recently alleged he was being questioned about things he “never said.”
Former deputy Elisa Carrió also jumped to criticize Milei on Thursday. In a letter, she said that the statements were “improper” coming from a democratically elected president and went against the Constitution. Therefore, Milei’s is a “de facto government,” she said.
Days after the speech, Argentina’s LGBTQIA+ community called for an anti-fascist, anti-racist pride march on Saturday. In Buenos Aires, the protest will start at 4 p.m. in front of Congress, where demonstrators will go to Plaza de Mayo.
