The United Nations Educational, Scientific, and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) recently recognized the ESMA Museum and Site of Memory as a World Heritage Site for its “outstanding value to humanity.” This week, ESMA is reminding its visitors why.
On Wednesday, the museum will be hosting the 17th annual “Finding Yourself in Diversity” Day, bringing together more than 1,000 youths of different sociocultural backgrounds to foster tolerance and understanding. The event, which is free and open to the public, seeks to promote dialogue on a range of sensitive subjects, including racism, anti-Semitism, homophobia, and xenophobia, among others.
From 9 a.m. to 1:30 p.m., there will be a series of workshops on religious diversity, body positivity, music, dance, and more. Separate workshops will focus on football (“Fan School,” financed by the Dutch embassy) and the importance of comprehensive sex education (“Messirve la ESI”). Then, at 3 p.m., visitors can enjoy a discussion about diversity, equity, and inclusion between different experts and leaders from the public and private sectors.
This year’s “Finding Yourself in Diversity” Day arrives at a moment in which Argentina’s presidential frontrunner, Javier Milei, is threatening to roll back reproductive rights for women and openly denying the crimes of the country’s last military dictatorship.
The Foundation for Finding Yourself in Diversity, the event’s sponsor, works year-round with high schools across the city and province of Buenos Aires to educate students about bullying and different forms of discrimination. Its mission is to create social spaces that are free of violence and recognize diversity as a source of personal and professional growth.
The ESMA Museum and Site of Memory is located on Libertador 8151, in the Nuñez neighborhood of Buenos Aires.
