It takes two: Buenos Aires 2025 Tango Festival and Dance World Cup

More than 500 activities featuring top artists, dance shows, milongas and exhibitions, are planned in over 50 venues across the city

Buenos Aires is putting on its dancing shoes and stepping up for two major tango events. The capital will host the Tango BA Festival and the 2025 Tango Dance World Cup, from August 20 to September 2.

Organized by the city’s Culture Ministry under the artistic direction of Gustavo Mozzi, and announced as “the biggest tango gathering in the world”, the two events will offer more than 500 activities, featuring over 2000 artists in 50 venues.

The events were announced on Wednesday at the Teatro Colón, with a concert dedicated to legendary tango composer Aníbal Troilo. The official opening will take place on August 20 at Usina del Arte, with a special production that will gather top tango artists such as the Mayor Sextet, Raúl Lavié, Miguel Ángel Zotto and José Colángelo. The closing event is scheduled for September 1 and 2 at the Gran Rex theater, which will host the finals of the Dance World Cup in the Salon Tango and Stage Tango categories.

The festival will offer concerts, dance exhibitions and classes, milongas, educational events, screenings, exhibitions, and a product fair, as well as the international tango dance competition, which featured a new record of signups.

Participating artists include major household names like Sandra Mihanovich, Néstor Marconi, José Colángelo, Jairo, Lito Vitale, Raúl Lavié, Juan Carlos Baglietto, Leo Masliah and Adriana Varela.

“The Tango BA Festival and World Cup is much more than an event: it’s one of the great celebrations of our identity. For two weeks, Buenos Aires is filled with music, dance, and culture in every neighborhood. We are tango, and with tango, we project ourselves to the world,” said city mayor Jorge Macri.

Buenos Aires Culture minister Gabriela Ricardes described the event as “a gathering of tradition and new perspectives that enrich the genre”, as well as an opportunity for “both established and emerging artists share the stage and orchestras connect with innovative formats.”

The event’s venues range from dance parlors to bares notables, museums and cultural centers, and the program will feature an array of diverse tango shows, from typical large orchestras to large more intimate, chamber-like formats, such as the series of unplugged concerts at the Salón Dorado of the Colón theater.

New and traditional repertoires will be performed by established and emerging artists, and classic salon dances will dialogue with stage dance languages, featuring both community-driven projects and international guests. The full program is available on tangoba.org.
