Return of the Davis Cup: Argentina to play Turkey in Neuquén

Over 2 years after its last local match, Argentina will take the tennis tournament to Patagonia for the first time in September

After more than two years, Argentina will once again play at home in the Davis Cup in 2026. On September 19 and 20, it will host Turkey in Neuquén for World Group I. Argentina’s last home match was against Kazakhstan in Rosario during the 2024 season.

The series, which will determine a spot in the 2027 qualifiers, will carry significant additional symbolic value. Not only will it be the first time the Davis Cup is held in Patagonia, but this will also be the southernmost series organized by Argentina since its debut in the competition.

The games will be played at the Ruca Che Stadium on an indoor hard court, an unusual choice for a country historically associated with clay courts and outdoor venues. It will take place after the US Open and before the ATP tour in Asia, where matches are also played on hard courts.

The last time the national team played a home series indoors was in its 2008 final-round loss to Spain in Mar del Plata. Since then, 17 series have been held in the country, all on clay.

A historical series

The tournament will take place in the same year that marks the 10th anniversary of the historic victory that secured the “Silver Salad Bowl” in Croatia in 2016. The national team will also look to reach its 100th Davis Cup victory. Its current record is 99 wins and 75 losses.

For captain Javier Frana, this will be his debut coaching on home turf.

Neuquén, in turn, will become the sixth province in the country to host a Davis Cup series. Since 1931, Argentina has hosted matches in Buenos Aires City and in the provinces of Buenos Aires, Mendoza, Córdoba, San Juan, and Santa Fe.

“We are immensely proud to bring the Davis Cup to Neuquén. Many of us are from the provinces, and we know exactly what it means to host events of this caliber and see their idols play at home,” said AAT President Agustín Calleri.

Argentina currently ranks tenth in the International Tennis Federation (ITF) nations’ ranking and will enter the series after losing to South Korea on the road in the first round of the 2026 qualifiers.

Despite that setback, Argentine tennis is experiencing one of its best moments in recent years in terms of representation among the elite of the main tour. The country currently has 10 players in the top 100 of the ATP singles rankings, a figure surpassed only by the United States and France.

In doubles, four other Argentines are in the top 100, including Horacio Zeballos, the world No. 3 and a recent runner-up at Roland Garros for the second consecutive time.

Turkey ranks 33rd in the ITF country rankings. They advanced to this stage after defeating Slovenia 3-1 on the road in the first round of World Group I. None of its players currently rank among the top 300 in the ATP rankings.

An iconic venue

The Ruca Che Stadium, which can seat 3,500 fans, is one of the most iconic sports venues in Argentine Patagonia. It recently underwent a modernization and renovation process that will allow it to host an international event of the Davis Cup’s magnitude for the first time.

Taking the tournament to Neuquén, which expands the competition’s venues in Argentina, is part of a decentralization strategy promoted by the Argentine Tennis Association aimed at new regions of the country.
