Argentine players saw mixed results as they debuted at the 2025 U.S. Open, the last of the four tennis majors of the year. Tomás Etcheverry (59th ATP singles ranked) and Francisco Comesaña (54) made it to the second round, while Camilo Ugo Carabelli (43), Mariano Navone (78), Sebastián Báez (38) and Federico Gómez (127) are all out.
Etcheverry was the first to hit the courts, taking on Ugo Carabelli early on Sunday’s shift. The former world N° 27 has struggled all season, but came out strong against Carabelli, who was coming back from a knee injury. It was 6-3, 6-2, 6-0 for Etcheverry, who’s set to face Czech star Jiří Lehečka (21) in the second round.
The second Argentine win came on Tuesday, as Comesaña came back from behind to beat another local, 20-year-old Alex Michelsen (32) by 1-6, 6-3, 6-4, 6-4.
“It was a first set to forget,” Comesaña told the press after the match. “I wasn’t feeling good on the court, but I fought for every point and that gave me an advantage. He wasn’t playing well either, but I won because I fought for it more.”
The Mar del Plata-born will have to keep fighting, as he’s set to face Brit Cameron Norrie (35) in the second round.
Those were the only good news for Argentines. Navone played a marathon of a match on Monday, battling for over four hours with U.S. player Marcos Giron. Fighting from two sets down, the Argentine tied the match and took to a deciding fifth set, but was unable to complete the comeback, losing 6-0, 7-5, 4-6, 5-7, 6-4.
Former top-ranked Argentine Báez continued with the poor run of form that has seen him win just four games since March, losing to South Africa’s Lloyd Harris 6-3, 7-5, 6-4. Meanwhile, Federico Gómez, the only Argentine to enter the main draw from the qualifiers, lost to world N° 5 Jack Draper by 6-4, 7-5, 6-7, 6-2 in just over three hours of play.
That means the only two Argentines left to play in either singles draws are the top men’s and women’s players, Francisco Cerúndolo (19) and Solana Sierra (74 WTA singles ranked). Cerúndolo is set to face Italian Matteo Arnaldi (64), while Sierra will match up against Romania’s Sorana Cirstea (57), both scheduled to play on Wednesday.
