Brazil: Supreme Court orders house arrest for Jair Bolsonaro

The former president participated in a demonstration on Sunday in Copacabana, violating July restraining orders imposed on him by the courts

Brazil’s Supreme Court on Monday ordered former President Jair Bolsonaro to be placed under house arrest for “repeated failure to comply with precautionary measures” and also banned him from receiving visitors.

The Supreme Federal Court of Brazil (STF) judge, Alexandre de Moraes, ruled that the former president may only be visited by his lawyers and persons previously authorized by the court, and that he may not use a cell phone.

“Justice will not allow a defendant to dismiss her as a fool, believing that she will remain unpunished because of her political and economic power,” the judge stated in a document reviewed and obtained by AFP.

The judge explained that the decision was due to Bolsonaro’s failure to comply with the court-ordered restraining orders imposed on him in July, after he was seen participating in a demonstration this Sunday in Copacabana, Rio de Janeiro. He even shared images on social media, violating the court-ordered measures.

Thousands of Bolsonaro supporters took to the streets of São Paulo to protest against the government of President Lula da Silva and Supreme Court Justice Alexandre de Moraes, waving American flags and carrying banners reading “SOS Trump.” The protesters supported Donald Trump after he admitted to imposing 50% tariffs on Brazil for prosecuting its ally, accused of plotting a coup to stay in power.

The Prosecutor’s Office accused Bolsonaro of leading a criminal organization that conspired to overturn the elections, with plans to assassinate the current Brazilian president. In that context, last month he was ordered to wear an electronic anklet and his activities were restricted while the investigation continues.
