YPF President and CEO Horacio Marín announced this Wednesday that the Argentine state-owned energy company will bring in the two “largest LNG tankers in the world” as part of its Vaca Muerta gas export policy.
The president of Argentina’s oil company also reported that he will be traveling to Italy on Friday to meet with Prime Minister Georgia Meloni. At 7:30 p.m. local time, they will sign an investment commitment contract with ENI (an Italian acronym for National Hydrocarbons Corporation).
Marín made the announcement at the 2025 Energy and Production Meeting being held in Bariloche, in an interview with journalist Julián Guarino from Herald sister publication Ámbito.
Marín announced that this is a contract for 50 million cubic meters of exports. He also announced that a “very important” third global player will also join the project.
The official indicated that they expect to sign the final agreement by the end of this year. “There will be two ships, each weighing 6 million tons, the largest being built in the world,” said the YPF president.
“Eni is our strategic partner, they have a wealth of knowledge about offshore, and they have been working with this company, so it was a planetary alignment, as they say,” said Marín. He added that, 16 months ago, no one thought LNG could become a reality.
“The truth is we are very advanced.”
Showing clear optimism for the future, the president and CEO of the oil company explained that all the ongoing LNG projects underway will provide the country with an export capacity of 75 million cubic meters per year.
In this regard, Marín said that in the coming years and until 2031, Vaca Muerta will need to drill some 800 new gas wells. This is almost 50% more than the wells already drilled since the unconventional field began to be exploited.
