Argentine pop star María Becerra underwent emergency surgery at a clinic on Wednesday morning and remains hospitalized in the Belgrano neighborhood of Buenos Aires. The artist was reportedly admitted around midnight on Tuesday with severe abdominal pain. On late Wednesday, it was announced that the artist had suffered a second ectopic pregnancy.
Earlier on Wednesday, journalist Gustavo Méndez confirmed the news on streaming channel LOVE/ST and provided details about the singer’s medical condition.
According to Méndez, the 25-year-old artist was immediately transferred to the shock room upon arrival. The decision was then made to perform surgery due to the singer’s diagnosis of “acute abdomen with hypovolemic shock,” a severe clinical condition encompassing a significant loss of blood or fluids, compromising the functioning of vital organs.
Following the operation, Becerra was transferred to the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) and remained intubated for several hours. A note on her social media account written by close friends later read “Mari suffered another ectopic pregnancy that led to life-threatening internal bleeding.”
J Rei, the singer’s partner and also a fixture on the urban music scene, has reportedly remained by her side the whole time.
Becerra was expected to perform at the 12th Platino Awards gala in Spain on April 27 and play an unreleased track live for the first time. Earlier this year, Becerra became the first Argentine female artist ever to perform sold-out shows at the River Plate stadium, the biggest in Argentina and South America.
A former YouTuber born in Quilmes, Buenos Aires province, Becerra’s ascending international career as a song artist has included collaborations with artists such as Camila Cabello, J Balvin, Jason Derulo, and Michael Bublé. Last year, she was featured in a new music video alongside US socialite and singer Paris Hilton.
Becerra performed two of her songs at Times Square on the 2024 New Year’s Eve show. Last October, she kicked off a two-week-long US tour and appeared on Kelly Clarkson’s talk show, where she was interviewed and performed her song IMAN. That September, she was the second most nominated Argentine artist at the Latin Grammys.
Prior health issues
Thursday’s episode comes just seven months after the artist announced her miscarriage on social media. At that time, in September 2024, she revealed that she had suffered her first ectopic pregnancy, a process that develops outside the uterus and can be dangerous if not treated promptly.
“I had to undergo surgery because I was experiencing an ectopic pregnancy,” the singer wrote at the time on Instagram, alongside a photo of herself and her partner cuddling in a hospital room. She also explained that she discovered her condition after landing in the ER with severe pain.
In that same post, Becerra acknowledged the emotional impact of the moment. “We longed to be parents and have a baby,” she wrote, adding that the couple’s wish remained unchanged.
“We have so much love and a whole life ahead of us.”
