Deputies file complaint against Karina Milei for bribery, influence peddling

Mónica Frade and Maximiliano Ferraro called for an investigation into the president’s sister over the $LIBRA crypto scandal

Two deputies filed a legal complaint against the President’s sister and Secretary General of the Presidency, Karina Milei, over her potential role in the $LIBRA crypto scandal. The complaint, made by Coalición Cívica lawmakers Mónica Frade and Maximiliano Ferraro, calls to investigate Karina for “the possible commission of bribery and influence peddling.”

The deputies cited Argentina’s Public Ethics Law, which mandates that officials cannot “receive any undue personal benefit related to the performance, delay or omission of an act inherent to their public roles.”

On February 14, Milei posted on social media about a cryptocurrency known as $LIBRA, which was linked to a private project called Viva La Libertad (Long Live Freedom) supposedly intended to finance small Argentine companies. Hours later, after 40,000 people invested and lost everything, he erased the publication.

Pictures of Milei with Hayden Davis and Julian Peh, the creators of $LIBRA surfaced online, and the president has confirmed the contact.

Frade and Ferraro’s complaint will be handled by prosecutor Eduardo Taiano, now in charge of investigating the crypto scandal, and Judge Marcelo Martínez de Giorgi. Taiano had so far excluded Karina from the investigation.

“In her role as Secretary General of the Presidency, reinforced by the fact that she is his sister, Karina Milei manages the president’s interview agenda. There had already been mentions of payment for candidacies,” the deputies argued in their presentation.

According to reports from La Nacion and the publication CoinDesk, which specializes in digital currencies, $LIBRA co-creator and Kelsier Ventures CEO Hayden Davis bragged that he had the Argentine president in his pocket because he was funneling money to his sister. “I control that n****,” Davis wrote in texts reviewed by the two outlets.

“I send $$ to his sister and he signs whatever I say and does whatever I want.”

Ferraro and Frade said that if those accusations were true, Karina Milei “would be profiting from her public role and commercializing her brother’s position to benefit herself and her family.”

Frade and Ferraro pointed out that, in the U.S. courts, Karina Milei “is accused of being the one who coordinated the meetings between the president and the promoters of the controversial crypto.”
