Get Out! Drag brunches and punk rock to distract yourself from the heat

From champagne to rainbow cake, the city may be empty, but your social life doesn’t have to be

It’s sweltering out there, so if we’re being totally honest our Buenos Aires weekend recommendations would be to find a friend with a pool. However, “stay inside with the AC on” doesn’t make for the best article.

So, if you’re gonna venture out, we’ll help make it worthwhile. Cue: Drag queen brunch.

Drag Brunch

Saturday 18 — 1 p.m. to 4 p.m.

Maricafé (Honduras 4096)

ARS $4,000 entry fee, plus cost of brunch

Gossip without guilt to Maricafé’s queens as you gorge on champagne and rainbow cake. There are worse ways to beat the heat. Expect a talk-show style wild summer brunch full of games, trivia, prizes, lipsyncing, and decadent food.

Royalty Ay Brit and Camionera Travesti will be hosting, taking over Palermo and staging a rebellion at Maricafé, a refuge to cure your hangover or start the weekend off right. If you contact the cafe in advance, there’s also the option of having a drag brunch in Portuguese or English.

Fiesta Antiplaya

Friday 17 — 10 p.m.

Niceto Sala Humboldt (Humboldt 1358)

Tickets are ARS $10,000

If you’re in the mood to jump around, this punk rock night is hosting three bands that promise a party — Las Vin Up, Nasty Neighbours, and Angry Zeta. Fiesta Antiplaya’s selling points for a “resistance refuge in the middle of summer” promise a guarantee of: no sand in your phone, no harmful UV rays, and a solid floor for jumping. Which, let’s be honest, is a pretty tempting offer.

Las Vin Up are a Ramones-style punk rock group. Nasty Neighbours is a cocktail of punk rock, indie punk, and glam punk. And Angry Zeta delivers sharp and intense versions of both classic and lesser-known bluegrass and old-time songs, infused with punk and street roots. There will also be an afterparty with DJs.
