Buenos Aires Theater Festival kicks off, focusing on Spain and Italy’s theater scene

One of the country’s landmark cultural events will showcase theater, dance, music, and performance works in 40 venues across the city

Buenos Aires’ already vibrant theater scene will get a boost this weekend with the 10-day Buenos Aires International Festival (FIBA), which kicks off on Friday, October 18. The festival will feature an array of theater, dance, music, and performance works in 40 venues across the city.

Created in 1997, FIBA’s programming usually includes projects that are trending in the world’s main festivals, featuring renowned plays and performance works from all over the globe. Artists from Germany, Canada, Catalonia, South Korea, the UK, and Croatia, among others, will bring their latest work to the festival, which features two main international programs: Barcelona-Buenos Aires Bridge (with the support of the Ramón Llull Institute) and Italy Window (Ciclo ITALIA XXI – produced by Teatro Coliseo and the Istituto Italiano di Cultura).

The program will also introduce new disciplines such as circus, object theater, music, and cinema. In parallel, special activities will include open tables, workshops, and book presentations.

“We think and project FIBA as a festival of festivals, with programming created from what’s on in the main festivals and production venues in the world,” said FIBA’s artistic director Federico Irazábal in a press statement.

“This way, we guarantee that what we get in Buenos Aires are those projects that are currently trending and are a sign of innovation in their respective countries.”

The program is also made of 26 local projects: 14 co-productions are premiering at the festival, while 12 others were selected in an open call with more than 800 applicants. A sidebar named Platea Baja (Spanish for ‘Ground Floor Seats’) will offer a selection of local and foreign acts for younger audiences.

FIBA will run from October 18 to October 27. Tickets are available at fiba.ar.
