What was Liam Payne doing in Argentina?

The former One Direction star had come to Buenos Aires with his girlfriend, who decided to return to Florida alone earlier this week

Former One Direction member Liam Payne’s tragic death in Buenos Aires has shocked the world. Authorities are now investigating the circumstances of his fall from a third-floor hotel balcony on Wednesday afternoon, where he had checked the week before.

Payne had arrived in Argentina on October 1 in time for his former band mate Niall Horan’s concert the next day at the Movistar Arena. Payne had announced earlier this month he would travel to Argentina because he wanted to see Horan’s show, and also because he needed to speak with him.

“It’s been a while since me and Niall have spoken,” he said in a Snapchat video. “We’ve got a lot to talk about, and I would like to square up a couple things with the boy. No bad vibes or anything like that, but we need to talk!”

Payne attended the concert, dancing, taking pictures, and waving at nearby fans who were excited to see him there.

A video showed a staff member from the arena telling him to back away from the venue’s balcony and go back to his seat.

Payne and Horan ultimately took a picture together, smiling, after the show was over.

Payne came to Argentina with his girlfriend, Kate Cassidy, but she left Argentina on Monday. The former One Direction star posted a picture of the two posing in front of a mirror minutes before he died (although the picture is from last year, as can be verified on Cassidy’s Instagram). He posted content regularly that appeared to be from his stay in the country, including videos from one of Paul McCartney’s “incredible” concerts and a photo captioned he had had a “lovely day in Argentina.”

Cassidy posted a TikTok video saying she “loved South America” but had decided to return to Florida on her own. “I hate staying in one place for too long, and we were supposed to be there for five days, but it turned into two weeks.” Cassidy has not posted any content on social media since news of Payne’s death broke.

In August 2023, Payne canceled his South American tour due to a kidney infection. He was supposed to perform in Buenos Aires in September of last year and came to Argentina in May for Louis Tomlinson’s concert.
