The BA Architecture Biennale to flood the city with art and design

The five-day event will run from October 9 to 13, featuring conferences as well as exhibits and events for non-specialists

Spring is finally here, opening the doors to weather more suited to venture outdoors and experience all the things Buenos Aires has to offer. From picnics and bike rides to city outings, everything is better with warmer and longer days. 

Architecture buffs are among those to be most benefited\ from the rise in temperatures. The Buenos Aires Architecture Biennale is set to kick off on Wednesday October 9, with a flurry of events, from specialist talks to open-air exhibits and concerts. Created in 1985, the biennale is a fixture for design professionals and enthusiasts, welcoming architects, city planners, and designers from Argentina and the globe to showcase their work and discuss the future of cities, building, and design.  

The 19th BA Architecture Biennale will take place over five days in the Faena Art Center, Aime Paine, 1169, Puerto Madero. Between Wednesday and Sunday, October 13, more than 40 architecture firms will give conferences centered around new design trends, sustainable building and environmental challenges, the impact of new technologies on city planning and construction, and the future of communal living. 

Some international guests are Román Viñoly (member of U.S. firm Rafael Viñoly Architects, designers of iconic skyscraper 432 Park Avenue), Daniel Vasini (Creative Director of Dutch firm West 8, specialized in landscape and urban design), Dr. Philip F. Yuan (design and technology expert, China), Vladimir Belogolovsky (critic and curator, United States), and Roland Halbe (architecture photographer, Germany), among others. Argentine architects and designers Bárbara Bergson, Francisco Cadau, Cristián Mohaded, PALO Arq, and Zaida Muxi will also make appearances.

Conferences will begin every day between 9 and 9.30 a.m. at the Faena Art Center and continue until around 7 p.m., with a short lunch break. Most events will be in-person talks but some will be via streaming. All conferences will be free and open to the public. You can check the full list of speakers and scheduled starting times here

The biennale will also have a series of events for non-specialists. A selection of contemporary Argentine and global buildings and projects will be on display at the Faena Art Center. The exhibition includes high quality images and blue prints of family homes, residential housing complexes, public buildings, and urban projects from over 60 architecture firms and designers. The concert Field of Vision, by U.S. composer Michael Gordon, will be performed for the first time in Argentina on Wednesday at 8.45 p.m. on the Puente de la Mujer, the famous bridge in Puerto Madero designed by Spanish architect Santiago Calatrava. This sixty-minute percussion concerto is an open-air show aimed at showing the movement of sound. It will be performed by the Tambor Fantasma group alongside students from the Buenos Aires City Piazzolla Conservatory and the Superior Art Institute of Teatro Colón (ISA, for its Spanish initials), among others. 

There will also be outdoor exhibits in different parts of Puerto Madero devoted to design and art. Strolling around the nieghborhood you can run into Un nuevo horizonte (A new horizon), a series of compiled sketches from 1929 to 2022 documenting the evolution of Puerto Madero and imagining what it could become. There is also Redescubrí la ciudad (Rediscover the city), a exhibit showcasing the urban design projects of late Argentine architect and designer Diana Cabeza. The final one is DUCTO Maker Space Berlin-Buenos Aires, with urban interventions aimed at showing how different sites can become a place for social interaction.
