Herald favorites: wine bars in Buenos Aires

You don’t have to be an aspiring sommelier to raise a glass at these fun and stylish establishments

From dry syrahs to supple malbecs and delicate pinot noirs, Argentina is synonymous with wine. This is the land of expansive vineyards, after all. But just because you don’t live in the mountains of Mendoza doesn’t mean you can’t enjoy the very best bottles that the country has to offer. Porteños love wine, and they seldom need an excuse to pour a glass — especially at one of the craft events for which Buenos Aires is famous.

The city’s ubiquitous wine bars allow you to sample different glasses from regions across the country. And if you’re not into reds, there are plenty of establishments with Torrontes, a delectable white, on offer.

Here are seven of our favorite spots in Palermo, San Telmo, and the rest of the capital.

Aldo’s Restauran Vinoteca

Arévalo 2032
Hours: 12 p.m. to 11:30 p.m, Monday to Thursday, Sunday; 12 p.m. to 12:30 a.m. on Friday;  6:30 p.m. to 12:30 a.m on Saturday
Instagram: @aldosrestaurante

If you’re looking to familiarize yourself with the world of wine, Aldo’s is a great place to start. The bar offers more than 700 vintages, and the restaurant has its own sommelier, so you’re sure to find the bottle that’s right for you. The wine rack walls and wood-theme decor mimic the wine tasting experience in Mendoza, and the Italo-Argentine cuisine is no less impressive. If you’re especially taken with a bottle, you can order it on the restaurant’s website, where you can participate in a wine club and further expand your wine horizons.

Vina Buchette

Echeverría 1677
12 p.m. to 12 a.m., Wednesday to Sunday
Instagram: @vina.buchette

Like traditional Tuscan wineries, Vina “Buchette” (from the Italian buchetta, meaning small opening) displays its goods in the window of its tiny shop in Chinatown. This wine bar specializes in two products: wine and empanadas, for meat eaters and vegans alike. It prides itself on being unconventional, offering a niche selection of wines from such small producers as the Pielihueso or Stella Crinita in vintage glasses.

Naranjo Bar

Angel Justiniano Carranza 1059
Hours: 6 p.m. to 12 a.m., Monday to Saturday
Instagram: @naranjo_bar

Named after the orange tree in the street outside, Naranjo offers cool music, cool vibes and cool wine. Set in a renovated old-fashioned house, Naranjo offers both a strong list by boutique producers and commendable house wines. Head there on Wednesdays from 7 p.m. when a DJ steps in to help you break up the week.

Overo Bar de Copas

Nicaragua 4583
Hours: 5 p.m. to 12 a.m., Monday to Sunday
Instagram: @overo.bar

Overo is as much a social space in which to drink wine as a regular wine bar. Not only does it offer a splendid variety of wines, as well one of Buenos Aires’ more elegant terraces on which to enjoy them. The team also hosts regular cultural events including weekly movie screenings and “couch and wine” nights that blend reading, wine, and discussions on psychology designed to spark deep conversation.

Anchoita Cava

Juan Ramírez de Velasco 1456
Hours: 12 p.m. to 12 a.m., Tuesday to Saturday
Instagram: @anchoitacava

Sister of the infamously sought-after Anchoita restaurant, Anchoita Cava defines itself as a cheese and wine bar, with sommeliers available to help you find the perfect pairing. There is also a shop, with cheese on the ground floor and a wine cellar. Like its Michelin-green-starred big brother, Anchoita Cava has earned international recognition, as a finalist on the Star Wine List of the Year International Open prize in the short list category. The place is cozy, packed, and doesn’t take reservations, so if you’re not a fan of waiting, consider bringing your wine and cheese home. Alternatively, Naranjo Bar is just three blocks away!

Gran Bar Danzon

Libertad 1161
Hours: 7 p.m. to 12 a.m., Monday to Friday; 8 p.m. to 12 a.m., Saturday and Sunday
Instagram: @granbardanzon

A downtown haven for wine lovers, Gran Bar Danzon is a well-appointed restaurant. It offers wine tastings on Thursdays, featuring four vintages expertly selected by the house sommelier. Reservations can be made on their website or via whatsapp. The food is wonderful in its own right, so you can have a great evening even if not everyone drinks.
