Two Syrians with false papers detained at US embassy

The men are believed to be father and son

Two Syrian nationals with false documents were detained on Tuesday at the Embassy of the United States in Argentina.

Federal police officers arrested two men, believed to be father and son, at the building in the Buenos Aires neighborhood of Palermo.

Despite initial reports that the events required the embassy to activate its anti-terrorism protocol, sources at the embassy confirmed that this was not the case.

The arrests were made by officers of the Federal Police’s anti-terrorism investigation unit, who confirmed that the men’s documents were false.

Staff from the explosives division were also involved, in order to carry out a thorough inspection of the gray Volkswagen Vento the men were using, which was parked on the corner of Libertador Avenue and John F. Kennedy street.

As a precautionary measure, Colombia Avenue was closed between Sarmiento and Cerviño street while the protocols were carried out.

The case is being handled in Federal Criminal and Corrections court 6, by judge Daniel Rafecas.
