Argentina to exit international institutions in line with Trump’s lead

Official sources say that the Milei administration considers many of them to be ‘socialist strongholds’

Argentina is planning on abandoning many international institutions, a move in line with U.S. President Donald Trump’s decision to withdraw his country from the United Nations Human Rights Council (UNHRC). The Milei administration is considering “leaving many international organizations that are really socialist strongholds,” a government source told Herald sister publication Ámbito

President Javier Milei has ordered Foreign Minister Gerard Werthein to handle this issue. The minister and his team are currently analyzing the legal implications of having Argentina withdraw from these institutions.

According to the government, Argentina is part of many organizations that demand “millions in dollars in expenses and don’t deliver any benefits for the country.” Furthermore, they claim that “leftist proposals” are issued within these institutions that are contrary to the new foreign policy the administration is trying to carry out.

On Tuesday, Trump issued an executive order withdrawing the United States from the UNHRC. He also ordered his country to leave the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East (UNRWA).

Questions in line with Trump

In line with the U.S. president, the Argentine government is also questioning the role of several global organizations.

Trump’s first move in this regard was to withdraw from the World Health Organization (WHO). Milei announced his intention of doing the same after expressing a critical view of the institution on many occasions. The WHO has been criticized due to its handling of the pandemic and the way it uses the funds it receives.

Another target of the administration is the Paris Agreement, which was signed in 2015 with the goal of mitigating climate change through international commitments aimed at reducing greenhouse gas emissions. According to Milei, climate change is a “socialist lie.”
