The Argentine government filed a complaint against its Venezuelan counterpart before the International Criminal Court for the siege of its embassy in Caracas and the threats made against the Venezuelan opposition members inside the compund. All six of them have requested that Argentina grant them political asylum.
Argentine Ambassador in the Netherlands, Mario Javier Oyarzábal, filed the grievance with the tribunal in The Hague. The document accused the government of Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro of shutting down the power and gas at the diplomatic headquarters while also surrounding the building with security forces.
“The situation in Venezuela demands immediate attention. We deeply regret the lack of substantial advances in the investigation the prosecution is carrying out. Since the elections on July 28, circumstances inside the country have worsened even more,” Oyarzábal said.
“The rule of law does not apply in Venezuela,” the diplomat added, and urged the international community to take action. “Arbitrary detentions, inhumane treatments, and severe violations of fundamental rights require rigorous and integral investigations that are up to the standards of international law,” he argued.
Who are the Venezuelan opposition members inside the embassy
The six Venezuelan opposition members inside the embassy are part of the team of opposition leader María Corina Machado. Despite winning the opposition primary, she was banned from running in the presidential election. Edmundo González Urrutia ran in her place with her endorsement.
President Nicolás Maduro claimed victory in the July 28 election and was declared winner. The opposition counters that the vote count was fraudulent and that González Urrutia was the real victor.
Currently inside the compound are campaign head Magalli Meda, communications coordinator Claudia Macero, former Deputy Omar González, campaign election coordinator Humberto Villalobos, former minister Fernando Martínez Mottola, and international relations campaign coordinator Pedro Urruchurtu Noselli.
